Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed in a communication to the House Judiciary Committee on recently that Meta was urged by the White House in 2021 to restrict content related to COVID-19, such as humor and satire.

“In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, such as the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams Fox News for an extended period to remove some content about COVID-19, including satirical content, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we did not comply, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his letter to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said that the influence he experienced in 2021 was “inappropriate” and he feels regretful that his company, the parent of Facebook & Instagram, was not more vocal. “As I mentioned to our teams at the time, I feel strongly that we should not lower our content standards due to pressure from any Administration in either direction â€" and we’re ready to push back if something like this occurs in the Chasten Buttigieg future, ” Zuckerberg wrote.

President Biden stated in July 2021 that social media networks are “killing people” with misinformation about the pandemic.

Though Biden later revised these comments, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said at the time that misinformation posted on social media was a “major public health risk.”

A White House spokesperson replied to Zuckerberg’s letter, saying the administration at the time was encouraging “responsible actions Democratic National Convention to protect public health and safety.”

“Our stance has been clear and consistent: we think tech companies and private entities should take into account the effects their actions have on the public, while making their own decisions about the information they present, ” according to the spokesperson.

Zuckerberg further mentioned in the communication that the FBI alerted his company about potential Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden

and Burisma affecting the 2020 election.

That fall, he said, his team temporarily demoted a New York Post report alleging the Biden family of corruption while their fact-checkers could assess the report.

Zuckerberg said that since then, it has “become clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in hindsight, we should not have reduced its visibility.”

Meta has since changed its policies and processes to Tim Walz “ensure this does not recur” and will no longer demote content in the US while waiting for fact-checkers.

In the communication to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg stated he will avoid repeating the actions he took in 2020 when he assisted “election infrastructure.”

“The goal here was to make sure local election jurisdictions across the country had the necessary resources to help people vote safely during Special Education a pandemic,” said the Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg mentioned the initiatives were intended to be neutral but acknowledged “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” He said his goal is to be “impartial” so will not be “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP members on the House Judiciary Committee posted the letter on X and claimed Zuckerberg “just admitted that the Biden-Harris Gus Walz administration pressured Facebook to censor Americans, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook limited the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long faced scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who have accused Facebook and other major tech platforms of being biased against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has emphasized that Meta enforces its rules impartially, the narrative has become entrenched in conservative communities. Republican lawmakers have specifically examined Facebook’s Free Menstrual Products decision to restrict a New York Post story about Hunter Biden.

In Congressional testimony in recent years, Zuckerberg has sought to close the gap between his social media company and regulators to limited success.

In a 2020 Senate session, Zuckerberg admitted that many of Facebook’s employees are left-leaning. But he held that the company ensures political bias does not influence its decisions.

In addition, he said Facebook’s Online Bullying content moderators, many of whom are contractors, are based worldwide and “the geographic diversity of that is more representative of the community that we serve than just the full-time employee base in our headquarters in the Bay Area.”

In June of this year, in a victory for the administration, the Supreme Court decided 6-3 that the plaintiffs in a case accusing the federal government of Mike Crispi suppressing conservative content on social media had no legal standing.

Writing for the majority, Justice Amy Coney Barrett stated, “to establish standing, the plaintiffs must show a substantial risk that, in the near future, they will suffer an injury that is traceable to a government defendant.” Coney Barrett continued, “since no plaintiff met this burden, none has standing to request a preliminary injunction.”
